Your Bowl Your Way - Notes, Add-Ins, Adjustments
Every body, every day is different. These tips help you tweak, boost, or simplify the recipe to suit your goals, your kitchen, and your routine.
- Ditch the dairy? Use a high-protein plant milk (like soy or pea) and a plant-based protein powder instead of whey.
- Want it sweeter? Add a splash of vanilla extract and or some extra stevia, honey, maple syrup or regular sugar.
- Make it a meal: Blend in frozen banana or oats for extra carbs and creaminess.
- Ultra-filtered milk (sold as Calci-Trim in New Zealand) is regular cow’s milk that’s been filtered to remove some of the lactose and water, leaving behind more protein and calcium per cup. It’s lower in fat and higher in protein than standard milk—making it a great choice for anyone looking to boost their daily protein intake without extra calories. In this shake, it adds creaminess and over 10g of protein, just from the milk alone.

- Cool your coffee: If you’re using fresh espresso like I am, pour it straight into a glass and pop in a couple of ice cubes to bring the temp down. Hot coffee and protein powder are not friends—trust me on this one! (You could make your espresso shot the day before, but I never remember to!)

- Load up the blender: Once your coffee's cooled, toss everything into the blender—ultra-filtered milk, Greek yogurt, cooled espresso, ice cubes, whey protein, cinnamon, and stevia. It might not look glamorous at this stage, but just wait.

- Blend & pour: Whizz it up until silky smooth, then pour into your favourite tall glass or shaker. I went fancy with a metal straw, bamboo lid on a tall glass! (Oh and of course I scattered some coffee beans on the bench for the photo, but this is not essential!)

A few handy tips to make this Protein Coffee Shake recipe even easier and even quicker
- Hot coffee and whey protein don’t mix well—it can clump or curdle. Cool your espresso with a couple of ice cubes before blending.
- For an even colder shake, use frozen yogurt or add a few extra ice cubes.
- If using instant coffee instead of espresso, dissolve it in a few tablespoons of hot water, then cool before blending.
